PLANING SERVICES UNIT MIS VALIDATED A NEWLY DEVELOPED SOFTWARE FOR DATA ENTRY

On Wednesday 26th June, 2013 at 10:00 pm, the planning services MIS Team validated a new software for data entry. The objective of the development of the software is to reduce the possible errors emerging from data entering generated by the market data collectors (enumerators). The Deputy Director and Head of the Unit calls on stakeholders support for the effective operations of the market. The Team reaffirmed the significance of MIS which was assented by the participants, reiterating that famers, consumers, stakeholders and government utilizing agricultural produce should be well informed about the current market prices to assist them in decision making and planning. The Director General, department of agriculture reported that a Technical Cooperation Programmed (TCP) project has been prepared in respond to the quest and is designed to address the following problems:  Unavailability of reliable updated information (statistics and data) on the ANR sector and on the food and nutrition situation of the country on a continuous basis for prioritization, planning, resource mobilization, monitoring and resource management.  A weak and unreliable data base on the ANR sector and a similar system for management and dissemination of market information;  Human resources in the Ministry with inadequate knowledge and skills to produce services and products in statistics, policy, programming and monitoring. The Head of MIS reiterated that it was due to the aforesaid problems encountered by the management of MIS in the Planning services Unit that the Unit decided to develop a System for Data Entering, Recapturing, Processing and Analysis. This is done in fulfillment of MIS mission statement which states “To improve and sustain the availability of agricultural data to contribute towards increased level of food security, facilitate better informed farmers, traders and policy market decision making, planning, implementation and control.” The road map adopted by this validation workshop for the implementation of this tool aims to foster:  The adoption of the newly developed MIS for monitoring/evaluation of market prices.  The adoption of the implementation of MIS monitoring/evaluation of market prices for food security purposes. Stakeholders expressed their profound gladness for the wonderful development made by the planning services unit MIS team. The participants also assented to the problems highlighted by the Head of MIS team and expressed for actions to be made on them. Action points were also made for the MIS team for improvements on the new software. In addition, uniformity of data collection of the same commodity should persist across all markets to give a correct picture so as to reduce errors. . They were challenged to be able to generate market prices weekly, monthly and yearly as well as make comparison with the past year to better uniform consumers of price differences of commodities between current year and past years. To recap the gist of the validation, it is quite challenging for the MIS team to expand on coverage area. However, through stakeholders support and link with partners, their work will be easy. The workshop also lamented on the need for MIS to have back ups for all the data they are generating
